Justin Herbert

Despite putting together impressive statistical seasons throughout his career, Herbert has yet to make the kind of postseason run that changes the national conversation. Until that happens, the criticism will continue. This season feels different, though.
The Chargers have surrounded Herbert with more weapons, hired Mike McDaniel and continue building an offensive system designed to maximize his strengths. The excuses are becoming fewer, and the expectations are becoming greater. No one should confuse pressure with doubt. Herbert has already proven he’s capable of being an elite quarterback. Now it’s about proving he can lead this team to meaningful playoff success and finally put the postseason narrative to rest.
Quentin Johnston
There are very few players on the roster entering 2026 with more pressure than Quentin Johnston.
Since being selected in the first round out of TCU, Johnston’s NFL career has been filled with flashes of brilliance mixed with frustrating inconsistency. His combination of size, speed, and athleticism has always made him an intriguing weapon. However the production hasn’t consistently matched the potential. For Johnston, this season could be a turning point.
With defenses likely focusing plenty of attention on Ladd McConkey, Omarion Hampton and others, Johnston should have opportunities to find favorable matchups throughout the year. In late April, the Chargers picked up Johnston's fifth-year option. Making this year almost feel like a make it or break it type of season. If his production continues to grow, a long term contract could be in his future.
They simply need him to become dependable. A consistent Johnston would completely change the dynamic of this offense, giving Herbert another trusted option and forcing opposing defenses
to respect every level of the field. If he finally puts everything together, the Chargers passing attack could become one of the NFL’s most dangerous.
David Njoku
When the Chargers acquired David Njoku, it immediately changed the outlook of the offense. For years, Chargers fans have wanted Herbert paired with a true difference-making tight end, someone who can dominate the middle of the field, create mismatches against linebackers and safeties, and become a reliable target in critical situations.
Njoku has the talent to be exactly that. Now comes the challenge of proving he can stay healthy, fit seamlessly into the offense, and provide the impact the Chargers envisioned when they brought him to Los Angeles.
A productive season from Njoku wouldn’t just improve the passing game. It would create more space for the receivers on the outside, open opportunities in the red zone, and give Herbert another dependable security blanket whenever plays break down. If he performs the way many expect, he could quickly become one of the most important additions the Chargers have made in recent years.
Final Thoughts
The Chargers have assembled one of their most talented rosters in recent memory, but talent alone doesn’t win football games. Justin Herbert is looking to silence the playoff criticism once and for all. Quentin Johnston is trying to prove he can become the consistent playmaker the Chargers envisioned when they drafted him. Lastly, David Njoku has the opportunity to elevate the offense and show he was the missing piece at tight end.
