Vita Vea has officially requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Entering year 9, Vea has spent his entire career with the Bucs, including being a key part of the impenetrable unit that won Super Bowl LV. The trade request comes after reports that contract negotiations between the multi-time Pro Bowl nose tackle and the Buccaneers have reached a standstill.
Ted Nguyen of The Athletic reported that Vea “wants to go to a California team or the Raiders.” With the Chargers having the fourth-most available cap space in the NFL, they sit as a perfect spot to not only give Vea a new lucrative contract but also as a team with championship aspirations.
After losing Da'Shawn Hand to the Falcons in free agency, the current Chargers depth chart has Dalvin Tomlinson, who signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract this offseason. Last year for the Cardinals, Tomlinson was rated the 120th interior defensive lineman out of 134 by PFF.
In the fifth round, the Chargers selected defensive tackle Nick Barrett out of South Carolina. While Barrett thrives defending the run, tied for 14th most run stops of any defensive lineman last year, his pass-rushing tools still require significant sharpening.
Vea had 51 pressures last season, the third-most by defensive tackles, trailing only elite interior pass rushers Chris Jones and Quinnen Williams. He also outperformed Tomlinson in every impact metric last season, including pressures, sacks, tackles for loss, and run stops. A player of his caliber forces offenses to adjust protections, commit extra blockers, and avoid running directly in the middle of the defense.
That type of influence is exactly what allows elite defenses to remain consistent in the postseason, where stopping the run and generating pressure without blitzing become even more important.
The Chargers were a clear top-ten defense in the NFL, and adding Vea would give them the interior presence needed to transform an already strong defense into a complete championship-caliber unit.
